's go to jason carroll at the newtown united methodist church. that church has provided a spir out tether of sorts for a community awash in grief. what role does this church play today? >> reporter: well very important role this morning and this is where the church is going to be ringing the bell 2 times. everyone in the community is going to be listening as that happens. it's an ancient ritual that's taken place over decades. it used to be traditionally a call to worship but today as you know it's a call to remember. three pastors will take turns ringing the bell 28 times. i spoke to one of the pastors, past oor jane sibley. this is very personal for her. it's especially personal to pastor sibley, her family is directly connected to the school and she had an important message she wanted to get out to the survivors living here in newton. >> my grandsons give me the joy of being able to laugh for a moment and i'm refusing to allow that -- >> reporter: chase kowalski, one of the little boys who died in the shooting, went to this church here and his mother apparently, carol, has been

before but it's newtown. we don't know if there's any injuries but they are deploying units and cnn is sending crews and our affiliates are sending crews as well. they are en route to an elementary school in newtown. we are working our sources and our affiliates there in the area to try to figure out what is going on. as you know, law enforcement -- and we do here at cnn and all news organizations take it very seriously any time there are reports of a gun or shots fired at a school, elementary, junior high school, college, what have you. and that's what we are doing right now, checking on that for you. we're getting some information in. our producers are gathering it for us. we'll be back with the very latest on the other side of this break. don't go anywhere. in the united states. our correspondent who was in japan for cnn for years and years now living in the united states covering newtown, listen to what she had to say about the comparison between those two places. >> i moved back to the u.s. this summer for the last five years, i was living in japan as cnn's tokyo correspondent. in that entire time, i never covered a shooting. there aren't any. this is my third mass shooting i've covered in just six months. i don't have the answer but i can compare japan and the u.s. in japan, there are almost no guns. the average person just can't get one. and i have to tell you, it's the safest place i've ever lived. >> and yet, we can talk about a place that you covered as a journalist, the an toyate killings in norway, 2011, summer camp. 77 people killed most youngsters and norway is a country where it is tough to get a gun. so you can't stop this completely. but people will say if you reduce the number of guns, you'll have fewer of them. here's the thing. this is a country where i can say whatever i want. i can worship any way i want and according to the w

right now, but we're set up at that triage unit waiting to see what unfolds here, but still a very active scene here in newtown. >> liz, we are looking at live pictures right now, i don't think you realize that, but we have pictures from the scene, i think it might be your partner on this assignment. we can see the mass of cars and people, overhead, it looks like there's some sort of helicopter overhead, i'm not sure if there's a news helicopter or a police helicopter. is there a sense that those ambulances are coming and going from the scene? or are they staying? that's obviously key to the situation? >> reporter: yeah, i honestly can't see the school from where we are right now, we just parked our cars and ran as close as we could to this triage unit. but the ambulances are also parked right here behind the fire department, it looks like right now they're all just standing by. but those pictures that you saw earlier did show that chopper overhead. it seems like there's the possibility that they're still looking for one of the shooters. that has not been confirmed by police yet. b

. but apparently he hardly used it we will go live to newtown and look at the support pouring in from around the world. but first a final tribute to an american hero. the remains of the united states senator daniel inouye. carried his flag draped coffin into the capitol rotunda this morning. 31 others have had that honor. among them presidents abraham lincoln and ronald reagan. the democratic lawmaker died on monday at the age of 88. a highly decorated war veteran and the second longest serving u.s. senator. during world war ii, enemy fire left his arm hanging by shreds. as the story goes, he pried a grenade from the hand of his nearly severed arm and used it to fight back to protect his platoon. he lost that arm but later won the medal of honor. the nationest highest award for military valor. >> daniel inouye, in every sense of the word was a hero. >> shepard: former senate majority leader bob dole paid his respects today. the two met in a hospital in italy in the 1940s and senator inouye often credited his republican friend with getting him into politics. former senator elizabeth dole kiss

of all, you should know that the people in china are riveted by the tragedy of newtown, connecticut, and people in china feel very deeply about it, and their thoughts are with the families as well. just within the last weeks, we have undergone and seen major political events both in the united states and china. obviously, the reelection of president obama here, and also the unveiling of a new group of leaders in china. both aspects speak to continuity and change. we will head the new secretary of state, and if we are to believe the press reports it will be senator john kerry. the overriding thing that i want to impress upon people is there will be continuity in the u.s.- china relationship, because for quite some time the leaders of both countries have been committed to greater engagement with each other, and really working very hard at developing a mutually beneficial, constructive relationship and one with cooperation. the reason is that so much of the world's economy is in the asia-pacific arena. 60% of the world's gdp is in the asia-pacific region, and we are so economically int
